Algarve Weather and Climate

The Portuguese region of Algarve is well renowned for its beautiful weather and fantastic climate. Algarve is located in the southern region of Portugal's mainland. With temperatures reaching highs of 25°C (77 °F) in winter and 48 °C (118 °F) in summer, Algarve makes the perfect holiday destination. With the Atlantic to the west and the Mediterranean to the east, destinations such as the Algarve which are on the east coast tend to be warmer and drier. During the winter months, Algarve's climate is very mild and temperatures do not commonly fall below 0°C, with the exception of the winter of 2008/2009, when the weather was exceptionally cold and wet.  There is usually around six hours of sunshine per day in Algarve in winter, with short showers/thunderstorms.  

The summer months grant Algarve its reputation as one of the sunniest destinations in Europe. It provides an average of 12 hours of sunshine per day with little or no rain. The humidity levels tend to be low, and the cool breeze takes the edge of the soaring heat. Night time temperatures rarely drop below 20°C, providing a comfortable evening. Lighthouses

The Algarve has an impressive number of Lighthouses and view-points, some of which still operate after centuries of continuous service. One of which is worth visiting is the Cabo de S. Vicente Lighthouse, which is located at the West-most point of Sagres. It is one of Europe’s largest lighthouses and a famous attraction to the town.

 

Ria Formosa

The Ria Formosa is a range of canals, islands, marshes and barrier islands, stretching 60 kilometres along the Algarve coastline. Tourists can visit the Environmental Education Centre of Marim, to find out about the most suitable hiking trails and observatories (to source the best viewing points for various species). The park also organizes guided boat tours.

The Ria Formosa Islands are a perfect getaway for holiday goers seeking to relax on stunning beaches. From East to West, there is a succession of beautiful places like Faro Islands, Barreta, Culatra, Armona and Tavira, with long sand coasts. The icing on the cake is the white village named Cacela Velha, which has a remarkable heritage worth exploring. Climb the fortress, and enjoy the breathtaking landscape. There is also a variety of Theme Parks to choose from to keep the children entertained.

Fiesa

Fiesa, is an exhibition of sand sculptures held by Prosandart since 2003 in Pêra. This is considered to be the largest sand sculpture festival in the world, where every year a group of talented sculptors from all round the world, display their talents.

Zoomarine

Zoomarine is a unique experience for both adults and children, into the mysteries to marine life. It is located in Guia, close to Albufeira. Here you will be entertained by presentations featuring dolphins, seals and tropical birds. Not to mention an aquarium hosting sharks, various habitats, attractions and amusements for all to enjoy. Adults €27; children under 3ft 3in are free; taller children €18.

Water Parks

Algarve's water parks are a must see. Fun for all ages, and a great day out. The three main ones are:

Aqualand, which is one of Portugal’s biggest water parks, displays attractions for all ages such as the Kamikaze, Crazy Race, Banzai and Mini Park. Admission €22 per adult; €16 aged three-twelve; under threes free.

Aquashow Park Hotel, which is located in Quarteira, is popular for thrill seekers who take on its 50ft-high snake slide. Admission €27 per adult; €18 aged five to ten; under fives free. 

Slide & Splash, situated in Estombar, is spread over a large plot of seven hectares. Highlights, which draw in the crowds include the Tornado and the Turbulent River. Admission €24.50; €18 aged five-ten; under fives free.

Portugal’s southwest coast of Algarve features superb golf courses. With over 300 days of sunny weather, this is an ideal resort for those in search of great courses. The coastline has over 25 courses, all of which are within one and a half hours drive from the Faro International Airport.
